What Is The Tower of the Flock?

Week 3:

Having been to Bethlehem, I would like to explain the geography of the land.

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is the location of Jesus’ birth. In the first century after the death of Jesus, this location was identified, and a grotto was built over it. A few hundred years later, Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, built a large church over it.

This area was well known in the early times of the Church. The Catholic Franciscan monks have a very good understanding of the history of this grotto and the church. There has been very careful tracking of this location. To enter the cave where Jesus was born is an awe-inspiring moment!

It is under the Church of the Nativity. I felt a strong presence of the Lord. I know without a doubt that this is the exact location.

Geography also verifies this.

When you tour Bethlehem, the fields of the shepherds (known as the Shepherd’s Fields) are down the hill slopes from the Church of the Nativity. They are located very near one another. When the shepherds were given the message from the angels, they had to go up the hill slopes to the birthing place of the Temple flock – now seen as the location under the Church of the Nativity. Where they had to go was very clear to them; they understood the angel’s message. They had to go to THE manger at the birthing place for the Temple flock.

Let us return to Genesis 35:19-21 and look at two additional translations regarding Migdal Eder. This first version explains that it is a Flock tower.

So Rachel died, and was buried in the highway that leadeth to Ephrata, that is Bethlehem. And Jacob erected a pillar over her sepulcher: this is the pillar of Rachel’s monument, to this day. Departing thence, he pitched his tent beyond the Flock tower (Douay–Rheims 1899 American Edition; author’s emphasis).

There are other translations that explain it as a “watchtower.” The Amplified Version provides yet another understanding that the Tower of Eder was a lookout point used by shepherds.

So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). Jacob set a pillar (memorial, monument) on her grave; that is the [a]pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. Then Israel (Jacob) journeyed on and pitched his tent on the other side of the tower of Eder [the lookout point used by shepherds] (AMP; author’s emphasis).

This means that the tower of Eder was built on a high place overlooking the fields used by the shepherds.

That makes sense because a lookout for the shepherds in the area would have to be on the highest point. It would give the best visual of the sheep and watching for any predators in order to best protect them.

Micah 4:8 also lists the Tower of the Flock (watchtower; Tower of Eder in other translations). Let’s focus on the first part (first two lines) of this verse.

And you, O tower of the flock,

The stronghold of the daughter of Zion,

To you shall it come,

Even the former dominion shall come,

The kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem. (NKJV; author’s emphasis)

In His book, “The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah” Dr. Alfred Edersheim explains that the top of the tower, or watchtower, was the location where the shepherds took turns watching the flock to see if danger was approaching. In the tower’s lower level was the area where the lambs of the Temple Flock were birthed. Both were part of the same tower. The tower could be built on top of a cave which would be the birthing location for the lambs. The lambs then grazed in the fields around the tower in the area of Bethlehem. He also had another important revelation.

And yet Jewish tradition may here prove both illustrative and helpful. That the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem was a settled conviction. Equally so, was the belief, that He was to be revealed from Migdal Eder, “the tower of the flock” (Edersheim, 1883, 208).

What he is saying here was that the Messiah Jesus was to be revealed from Migdal Eder. This means that Jesus was born at Migdal Eder, the Tower of the Flock!

Let’s examine Micah 4:8 once again, focusing on the second part. It says that the Messiah would be revealed from here.

And you, O tower of the flock,

The stronghold of the daughter of Zion,

To you shall it come,

Even the former dominion shall come,

The kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem. (NKJV; author’s emphasis)

This verse states that to the Tower of the Flock (Migdal Eder), the former dominion (the Lord God) shall come or be revealed, bringing His kingdom.

Coupled with Micah 5:2, which is a prophecy that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem, a connection is made between the Tower (Watchtower) of Migdal Eder, Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus here. This prophetically means that Jesus would be born there – and revealed from here. He was revealed to the shepherds of the Temple flock at the Tower of the Flock or Migdal Eder.

Since the shepherds birthed the lambs of the Temple flock at the Tower of the Flock, all the provisions for the birth of The Lamb of God would have been there.

What God needed next was for His Son to be “revealed.” That revelation came through the shepherds. The shepherds knew exactly where to go when they heard the angel say that the Babe would be wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. They went directly to the Tower of the Flock to find Him.

God does not do anything by chance. God the Father prepared a special place long in advance where His Son would be born. The Tower of the Flock and Migdal Eder are the same location. Jesus was born in the cave where the lambs of the Temple sacrifice were birthed. He was revealed to the world through the shepherds who birthed and cared for the Temple flock. He announced to the world when His Son was born to the only people on earth who could truly identify Him. This glorious day was ordained in full detail by the Father.

Who Were The Shepherds?

Week 2:

Bethlehem was important to God for another reason.

It was where the lambs were born and raised for the Temple sacrifice. This meant that those shepherds to whom the angels appeared, were not ordinary shepherds. They were holy men specifically trained for this most holy task. Jewish writings in the Mishnah (early Jewish oral teachings) confirm this.

This is a quote from a message on Moody Bible Radio called “Shepherds: More than Field Hands” on a program called the “Land and the Book.”

…the flocks kept at Migdal Eder [Bethlehem] were destined for temple sacrifice. The shepherds keeping watch over these sheep knew the purpose for the lambs under their care. And their job was to keep the animals under them from becoming injured or blemished. It was to those watching over animals destined for temple sacrifice that the angels announced Jesus’ birth. “For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)

The lambs were birthed at Migdal Eder, and then they were raised in the surrounding fields of Bethlehem. This meant that the shepherds to whom the angels appeared were in those fields watching their sheep.

The arrival of THE Lamb of God was revealed to those responsible for watching over the sacrificial lambs that had always pointed towards Jesus. You see, these shepherds were the only people in the world who could recognize when the true Lamb of God arrived, based upon their care of the Temple flock.

How did they take care of the Temple flock?

The lambs had to meet specific criteria. They had to be free of any blemish. One way that the shepherds prevented any blemish was to “swaddle” the newborn lambs. This meant that they wrapped the lambs in strips of cloth and bound them to prevent them from marking themselves. Then they laid that lamb in a manger for protection.

A “manger” may refer to a feeding trough or a “stall” or “crib” where animals are housed, based on other Scriptural references of the same word in the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament). This could also mean a “stable.” It may not mean what we think of today as a “manger.” But it was a specific location where the swaddled lambs were kept, and these shepherds knew how to identify this location where they would find Jesus. The message from the angels pointed them to a very specific location that the shepherds knew how to find.

These shepherds had the experience to identify the Messiah when they saw Him.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:12 KJV).

The shepherds were given two keys by the angels – that He would be wrapped in swaddling clothes and that He would be lying in a manger. In Luke 2:15, the shepherds responded that they knew God made this known to them. This was their marching order from God – and they did it.

Where would they have known to go – since there were no directions provided? They knew exactly where to go to find Jesus. They went to the location where the Temple lambs were birthed! These shepherds were the only people on earth who could certify the birth of the true Passover Lamb. And they did.

Jimmy DeYoung, a prophecy teacher from Chattanooga, Tennessee, said this in one of his Christmas messages.

So, when these shepherd-priests went into Bethlehem and saw the baby Jesus wrapped in cloths, lying in a manger, they must have exclaimed, “There is the Lamb of God, prepared for sacrifice, unblemished!” They had to be excited beyond description because they were the only ones who could have understood the sign. It was just for them from God. It was personal!

This is so amazing – that only God could have prepared the birth of Jesus with this exact precision. Jesus was wrapped in cloth strips specifically meant for this purpose. Then God sent the shepherds of the Temple flock to certify that the Messiah was born.

God does not do anything by chance. God the Father prepared a special place long in advance where His Son would be born? He announced to the world when His Son was born to the only people on earth who could truly identify Him. This glorious day was ordained in full detail by the Father.

You cannot explain the meaning or direction of the sign they were given or their response unless you have the right manger and the right shepherds! (bibletruth.org).

Why Was Jesus Born In Bethlehem?

Week 1

This is the first of 4 blog posts to help us prepare for Christmas. Many churches celebrate the 4 Sundays of Advent leading up to Christmas. This is an important time to prepare our hearts to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of Jesus Christ. These blogs explain very important information to enhance our understanding of Christmas.

Some of this may be new Bible study information to you.

It is summarized from my Christmas book “The Tower of the Flock.” This book started as a Bible study for me. Several years ago on Christmas Day, I asked the Lord “Why was Jesus born in a manger?” He answered me “Because He had to begin His life as a Lamb.” I thought that statement was profound and one I had not thought about before.

After all, He is THE Passover Lamb. God led me on this Bible study journey and eventually I turned this study into a book. Week 1: Jesus’ birth

Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem was prophesied in Scriptures. He was of the lineage of David, and Bethlehem was David’s city. The Book of Micah was written 500 years before Jesus’ birth, and Micah 5:2 prophesies the birthplace of Jesus.

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,

Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,

Yet out of you shall come forth to Me

The One to be Ruler in Israel,

Whose goings forth are from of old,

From everlasting (Micah 5:2 NKJV).

This verse says that Bethlehem was a small village from the tribe of Judah. Ephrathah was a settlement within Bethlehem. This prophecy also says that the Ruler of Israel will come from here. His origins are from old, or from everlasting as some translations state. This is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Promised One, the Messiah, The Lamb of God, the Eternal God. This Scripture was fulfilled as told in the Gospel of Luke. “The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!” (Luke 2:11 NLT).

How did Bethlehem come to be David’s city?

It came into the lineage of David long before his time. The first time we see Bethlehem in Scriptures is with Isaac’s son, Jacob, and his wife Rachel. Rachel became the mother of Joseph (who was later sold into slavery in Egypt and became the second in command there) and Benjamin. While they were travelling, they neared Bethlehem and Rachel went into a difficult childbirth. She died there while giving birth to Benjamin. This is the first mention of Bethlehem in Scripture. Please also note in these verses, it mentions the tower of Eder, which is significant, as we will later see. Rachel’s tomb still exists today, and it is visited as a holy place.

Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder (Genesis 35:19–21).

Other predecessors in David’s lineage connected to Bethlehem include Ruth and her descendants.

Ruth’s mother-in-law was Naomi and Ruth followed her from Moab to Bethlehem when both their husbands died. Ruth later married Boaz, from Bethlehem. They had a son named Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse, who became the father of David. This makes Ruth the Great Grandmother of King David, the line from which the Messiah would be born. The land owned by Boaz was passed down to his family and probably included the fields where David watched his father’s sheep.

During the time of Jesse, Saul was king over Israel. He disobeyed God and was rejected as king. God sent the Prophet Samuel to Jesse in Bethlehem saying “I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons” (1 Samuel 16:1). The chosen son was David. David was anointed by Samuel on his family’s land in Bethlehem. Jesus, being a descendant of Jesse, is important. It was prophesied that the Messiah would come from the line of Jesse.

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse; And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him (Isaiah 11:1–2).

And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him (Isaiah 11:10).

David later became king, and it was from his lineage that Jesus would be born. Both Mary and Joseph were descendants of David.

Does not the Scripture tell us that the Christ will come from the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived? (John 7:40–42 AMP).

The Importance of Manners

What are manners?

Dictionary.com defines manners as “a socially acceptable way of behaving.”

At least that is what it used to mean, and still should. The manners of both adults and children today are not acceptable.

Why?

It is because manners have lost the place they once held in society since we did not continue to ensure its importance.

It is up to us to change that.

Let me give you an example:

I lived in Washington D.C. for a while and used to ride the metro system each day. I was astounded at the lack of manners that I saw. Youth sat in seats and let older passengers and pregnant women stand without offering them their seat. Men usually did not offer their seats to women either.

I was always shocked by what I saw. I would give up my seat for older persons, but the young people for the most part just sat there. That would have been totally unacceptable when I was younger. This is a result of neglecting to teach manners to the extent that is needed.

Good manners will open doors for you and your children. The right people will notice.

It could mean the difference between your child getting an opportunity or not. If I were a manager and I was looking for someone to work for me, I would choose the one who said “please” and “thank you” and was courteous to me. The one who showed good manners would be at the forefront.

If a person does not show good manners to the parent, teacher, boss or other leader, that person will not show good manners to others around them either.

If I were in the leadership position and I hired someone to work for me, I would want to know that the person I hired would show good manners to clients or customers. This process starts when children are young. It is up to the parent to teach them these good manners.

When I was young, the use of manners was visibly seen throughout society by both the young and old.

Not so much today.

The use of manners needs to be incorporated into all aspects of life and specifically taught by parents and grandparents. Please teach your children manners, and it will open doors for them in life.

It is a step on the road to success – to becoming a champion in life. We are in a world that needs more focus on manners.

How Does A Person of Good Character Act?

Good character is doing the right thing at all times, even when no one is watching (Dr. Christine Van Horn).

A person of good character has specific attributes that makes them function like they do. These people make a real effort to do the right thing all the time. Let’s take a look at these attributes and explore what they mean. This will help us better understand how a person of good character acts.

Persons of good character have internal standards

This means they make an internal decision to hold themselves accountable to standards in specific areas in their lives. It is a decision that they make for themselves and are their own judge regarding how they act. This is a powerful attribute. They hold themselves to their internal standards.

They make the effort to do the right thing

They are not seeing if they can do something without getting caught. They take the actions they need to ensure so they do the right thing no matter if anyone is around or not. Then they are consistent in their actions. They are the same in all circumstances. They may not always succeed, but they make the effort to do so.

They act the same whether anyone is watching or not

When they act the same in specific situations, it does not matter if anyone is watching or not. Their actions are consistent good actions. This makes them a more solid person and others come to know and understand their consistency and what to expect of them.

They are self-correctors

If they fail in a specific area where they have standards, they know how to self-correct. They do not wait for others to correct them if they fail or get caught. They step up to the plate and correct themselves. Sometimes it may be in the form of talking to others about the error they made. But most often, it is part of the internal standards they have set for themselves and the effort to always do the right thing. Then they make changes to ensure they do this action correctly the next time.

They practice endurance

Endurance means that you keep doing something even when it is not easy to do so. It may not always be easy to do the right thing – but you keep on that course of action anyway. Practicing endurance helps other areas of life too. An athlete needs to practice endurance and keep doing something until the goals of that physical activity are met. Endurance in the realm of school studies also applies. A specific course may not always be easy, but a person of endurance continues on no matter how difficult it is until that subject is mastered.

They are respectful of others

People of good character are respectful of others. Their own desires do not come first; they think of others according to the needs of that other person. Being respectful means that consideration is given to the other person. The person showing respect is polite, courteous, kind and is generally nice to others.

They practice self-control

Persons of character practice self-control. What is self-control? It means that they hold their emotions and actions in check and are not reactionary. They wait, take a deep breath and think through what happened and about their response. They do not take a negative action when they get angry. Two negatives do not make a positive. They hold themselves back from rapidly acting in a negative manner and stop and think through the implications of their own actions in response to a negative event or negative words spoken over them.

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls (Proverbs 25:28 NLT).

Foundational Values for the Next Generation

The first question to ask is “what is a value?” Then we can answer why some of these values are foundational.

A value is something of significance or merit and can be exchanged for something else of worth. It is useful and important.

In essence, a value has importance and is worth something. Being foundational means that it is basic and a building block for other things to be built on top. Foundational values are basic building blocks of values that we need to instill into the lives of our children while we demonstrate how they should operate.

Other values can later be added onto them once the basic ones are understood. We need to understand these for ourselves and then pass them on to the next generations. What are some of these foundational values?

They include essential character traits and life skills.

What is a character trait?

They are characteristics that show the qualities that are important in people’s lives. They define people and are things that others know are part of that person’s life.

Being a person of character is a personal decision and a consistent pattern of good behavior. Character defines who you are, how you need to respond to situations in your life and explains why you do the things you do.

I have identified hundreds of character traits, but some are more essential than others. The ones I consider most essential include being thankful, responsible, respectful and truthful.

What are life skills?

A life still is a practice or aptitude that helps a person function well in adult life.

Once they are learned as a child or adult, as long as they are practiced, they can be utilized throughout their lives. They are enhancements to everything else specific you do. Life skills are necessary components for success as an adult.

A person may be able to function without some of these, but these are really needed for a well-rounded, well-prepared adulthood.

I have identified 50 of them but I am sure there are many more. They are not trade or professional specific but are generally needed by all of us. The ones I consider most essential include adapting to change, goal setting, time management and problem solving.

We bond character traits and life skills together by showing our children how to put them into practice.

We do this by being the example in their lives.

Children are imitators of adults.

They watch what we watch, do what we do, and say what we say. We need to be the example of good character and life skills in order to be a more positive influence in their lives. Then we are better able to pass these foundational values on to the generations to follow.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS THAT HELP BUILD CHARACTER
Are you looking for a children’s book that helps build character? The first thing to recognize is how important it is that you are searching for this topic in the first place. This means that you understand the importance of your child reading and learning about character. This is your first step in the right direction.

Why is this more important now than ever before? In today’s world, the actions we see often on the news are a display of a lack of character. All you have to do is look at the news in any city on any given day. You see stories about riots, shootings, murders, theft, fighting, and so on… We often do not see the heartwarming stories about those who are doing good things for mankind and who show good character. Our children are being bombarded with what bad character looks like – and then given the impression that this is okay. We need to show them what good character looks like.

But this is not an easy task for adults today. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, teacher or organization leader, there are so many negative influences that you face. Here are a few of the hindrances that keep our children from learning about good character.
1. Fast moving information. Information is coming so fast. This includes news stories on social media. It updates minute by minute and this is a worldwide trend. Many of our youth have cell phones, which are really computers that also make phone calls. These computers are so full of negativity that they can access. They are not just to call you or text their friends. They may be seeing things that are beyond your control to review and provide guidance on first. You may not even be aware of some of the things they are seeing on their phones.
2. Undeveloped life experiences for our youth. Information is not always accurate. Our youth do not have the life experiences to filter out what is true and what is not. What they hear and see, they often believe. They may not have the internal skills to know the difference.
3. Unclear and rapidly developing situations. Things are happening faster than ever before. Grasping what is fully happening can be unclear, especially for our youth in negative situations. This is because of the abnormal stimuli and lack of time to process the events that are occurring around them. They may accept something negative that they would not otherwise if it had occurred in a normal timeframe.
4. Much of information on good character and good values is at risk of being lost. There was a time when good character and values were taught in schools. It is now up to the parents, grandparents, teachers, and children’s organization leaders to teach this. It is very important that we ensure our children know these things in order to provide them better success in their future.
5. In decades past good character was generally exemplified in everyday life. At least it was more than today. Sure, there are many people of good character around us, but in society as a whole it is not as prevalent as it was in the past. We need to search it out and show our youth what good character really looks like.
Your children need to understand what good character really is and how to develop it. The end goal is that we want our youth to become better persons of character. It will bring them better success in their lives – both now and in the future.

How we prepare our children for this is to teach them the foundational values that they need to know in advance. We want them to make the best decisions from their heart and not based upon peer pressure or spur of the moment thoughts. It is up to us to guide them properly and give them what they need when they are younger, in advance of needing this information in real world situations.

Even if your children currently display good character and you teach it to them, they need to enhance it in their lives to be the best that they can be. We need to teach them how to make excellent character choices and know the difference when they recognize others are taking actions that are not of good character. Getting your children interested in learning about character is an important start for them. A great way for your children to learn about good character is to read about it and have interesting reading to catch their attention.

Let me introduce you to a great option for the entire family. I have taught character to children and realized the importance of having a wholesome option for reading about character. I created a modern-day superhero that captures the imagination of children. After all, they like characters like Spider-Man, Batman, Captain America, and the list goes on. FAMILY RESOURCES

You may find other character books for your older children, but Captain Character® is a unique resource for you. I have added something to the Captain Character® website that is a great benefit to adults and is not available with any other superhero. Then, there is a document for each book, with background information and discussion questions. You can have a family or group discussion after reading the character sections of the book.

The national PTA website reports, “Creating a daily family reading habit gives children a boost over their peers. … Time spent reading together as a family is a long-term investment in vocabulary exposure. Family reading experiences give children the chance to ask questions about words they don’t understand, which leads to more effective reading.”

At this time when families are spending more and more time together, reading together is increasingly important. It shows how parents, grandparents and other adults can lead discussions around the character traits within the story. YOUR CHILDREN NEED YOU

Your children need your wisdom and direction. There is so much that you know and have experienced already that needs to be imparted to them. They may not know it yet and you may not understand the full importance of doing this – but it is very needed. Think of all of your life experiences and how “if you knew then what you know now!” You can give a glimpse of that to your children and in a great way. Guiding our children to make good decisions is rewarding. You will see successes in their lives and know you had a hand in it.
